As soon as I got Gypsy, we started looking for a second horse.

I took four horses home on trial before I found Toby, the ideal guest and husband horse. At age fifteen, this perfect gentleman was retiring from a long career as a ranch horse, and he has been a wonderful member of our family.

If you want a dead-broke horse, get a ranch horse: they have a fabulous work ethic and great manners. Toby carried my husband and many guests over the years, but now at age twenty-three, he is semi-retired.

Running around on our hills keeps him in good enough condition to carry an occasional rider on a short trail ride, and he is the safest horse on the ranch for the inexperienced or rusty rider.
